Imagine, being awakened by the smell of coffee brewing in a pot that you set the timer on the night before. If Starbuck's competitors were waiting for the store closings and laysoffs that Starbucks was rumored earlier this year to give them a little breathing room in the beverage sales department; they have another thing coming.  A new concept of coffee house launched by the Mega makers of exotic coffees took shape in two of their Seattle test stores.  It's been heard that if the test market favors then they will start another worldwide domination.

This go around is supposed to be what the Starbucks stores are not.  15^th Ave Coffee & Tea will have beer and wine added to their menu accompanied with an assortment of cheese platters.  Starbucks beer wine are rumored to be price pointed in the $4-7 range. They will still serve coffees that are even more hand constructed than the existing Starbucks franchises.

Aside from a small sign on the window stating "Inspired by Starbucks" you wouldn't know that it was a part of the Starbucks Company.  Some locals in Seattle who have visited 15^th Ave thought that they were trying to mask the establishment and reel in the boycotters of the old and bad Starbucks and still take their money in this new nice environment that serves beer.  ( In my own Homer Simpson voice.)

This blog usually covers topics such as how to brew coffee, how to clean coffee makers, and where to buy cheap coffee beans. Now I think it's time to talk about what you pour your coffee in before you drink it.  Believe it or not, there are golden rules to coffee mugs.  One simple little tea cup is not going to do the job for a serious coffee drinker.

If you are like me, then you like to drink your morning cup of coffee out of different kinds of mugs.  Here is a list of the proper usage of various coffee mugs in different situations.

Golden Rule 1.  The novelty coffee mug.  We all have received this as a gift at one time or another.  Novelty coffee mugs include but are not limited to your favorite sports team, your favorite cartoon character (shape of the coffee mug as the character is a bonus), or some witty saying like "World's Best Boss" are at the top of this list.

Golden Rule 2.  A personalized coffee mug.  Now these can come in two forms: 1. Your name printed on the mug or 2. the ever famous year you were born type of personalization. These come in handy in the office environment to quickly identify your mug in a stressful "first cup at work" situation.

Golden Rule 3.  Straight off the cuff humorous coffee mugs.  Not to be confused with the novelty coffee mugs these mugs go for the throat when it comes to humor.  An example of one is a coffee mug I received in 1989 that has four cartoon men drawn on it with cats sitting on their heads.  It reads "Men are all the same...Nothing but p***y on their minds."  Funny huh?

Golden Rule 4.  The Artistic Coffee Mug.  This one is for when you want to be taken seriously and is an expression of the inner self that has been printed on a cylindrical piece of porcelain.  Davinci's   Mona Lisa, Monet's water lilies, or four dogs playing poker are pieces of art found on this category of coffee mug.

Golden Rule 5.  The stainless steel travel mugs.  This coffee mug is more of a tool than an expression of the coffee drinker.  They are sometimes stainless steel, definitely insulated and mostly are accompanied by some sort of Rubik's cube type of latch or closure so that the coffee doesn't spill even in the most extreme driving conditions.

While all of these types of coffee mugs must hold an ample cup of coffee and keep it hot for a relative amount of time that only you can choose, they also reveal a little more about us to the people we cherish.  I am speaking of the people we choose to share a cup of coffee.

Equipment needed:

1.  Drip Coffee Maker

2.  White Vinegar

3.  Ice Cubes

4.  Salt

5.  Dish Washer Detergent

6.  A Dish Brush

7.  Baking Soda

Optional equipment:

Alka-Seltzer Tablets

Denture Tablets

A Fresh Lemon

STEP 1: Take equal parts of vinegar and water and run a cycle through your coffee maker.

Run 2 cycles of water through afterward to remove the vinegar smell and taste.

Alka Seltzer, denture tabs, baking soda, or juice from a lemon can be substituted here.

STEP 2: To Clean the carafe put ice cubes and salt into it and

STEP3: Swish it vigorously for a minute or two.

STEP4: Then rinse thoroughly.

For a Stainless Steel carafe- pour in boiling water and add powdered dish detergent  and let it sit over night.  Then clean with a dish brush and rinse.

STEP5: Remove the vinegar smell in the carafe by filling with warm water and 1tsp. of baking soda.  Let it sit for a few minutes and rinse well.

Depending on how well you like your coffee maker cleaned, some view that it changes the taste of the brew if cleaned too often, some say that the best cup is brewed through a thoroughly cleaned maker.  That point is up for debate and open for comments. So what do you think?

Cops and Coffee go together like apple pie and ice cream.  It's no secret that the key behind top notch law enforcement is the quality of their coffee.  Just as important as the quality of the law dogs' go juice is the speediness in which they can make it.  Most Police officers have to be ready to jump at a moments notice when something pops off and they can't be waiting around for a big pot to finish brewing.

Here are some vintage TV commercials of Wilkins coffee that aired way before the muppet show and other Jim Henson movies.

I know these were posted around the web about two years ago but I found them again and thought they would be worth a second look.

Wilkins was a coffee maker out of Washington DC in the late 1950s. They employed a twenty-something Jim Henson to promote their coffee.  I am not sure if it was cheap coffee or not but the commercial spots were short and sweet only about a few seconds each.

The anniversary of Jim Henson's passing is next month these vintage tv commercials are just the reminder that if you have a passion and follow it through to the end you have left behind something important for people of later generations to remember.
