This blog usually covers topics such as how to brew coffee, how to clean coffee makers, and where to buy cheap coffee beans. Now I think it's time to talk about what you pour your coffee in before you drink it.  Believe it or not, there are golden rules to coffee mugs.  One simple little tea cup is not going to do the job for a serious coffee drinker.

If you are like me, then you like to drink your morning cup of coffee out of different kinds of mugs.  Here is a list of the proper usage of various coffee mugs in different situations.

Golden Rule 1.  The novelty coffee mug.  We all have received this as a gift at one time or another.  Novelty coffee mugs include but are not limited to your favorite sports team, your favorite cartoon character (shape of the coffee mug as the character is a bonus), or some witty saying like "World's Best Boss" are at the top of this list.

Golden Rule 2.  A personalized coffee mug.  Now these can come in two forms: 1. Your name printed on the mug or 2. the ever famous year you were born type of personalization. These come in handy in the office environment to quickly identify your mug in a stressful "first cup at work" situation.

Golden Rule 3.  Straight off the cuff humorous coffee mugs.  Not to be confused with the novelty coffee mugs these mugs go for the throat when it comes to humor.  An example of one is a coffee mug I received in 1989 that has four cartoon men drawn on it with cats sitting on their heads.  It reads "Men are all the same...Nothing but p***y on their minds."  Funny huh?

Golden Rule 4.  The Artistic Coffee Mug.  This one is for when you want to be taken seriously and is an expression of the inner self that has been printed on a cylindrical piece of porcelain.  Davinci's   Mona Lisa, Monet's water lilies, or four dogs playing poker are pieces of art found on this category of coffee mug.

Golden Rule 5.  The stainless steel travel mugs.  This coffee mug is more of a tool than an expression of the coffee drinker.  They are sometimes stainless steel, definitely insulated and mostly are accompanied by some sort of Rubik's cube type of latch or closure so that the coffee doesn't spill even in the most extreme driving conditions.

While all of these types of coffee mugs must hold an ample cup of coffee and keep it hot for a relative amount of time that only you can choose, they also reveal a little more about us to the people we cherish.  I am speaking of the people we choose to share a cup of coffee.
